Youth Demand supporters have taken to the streets once more to demand that the UK government impose a total trade embargo on Israel, and make the super rich and fossil fuel elite pay damages to communities and countries most harmed by fossil fuel burning. [1]
At 9:45 this morning, around 25 supporters of Youth Demand disrupted traffic at Eastcheap Road near the Walkie Talkie building, departing after 13 minutes. The Youth Demand supporters could be heard chanting ‘Israel is a terrorist state!’ and held banners which read: ‘Youth Demand an End to Genocide.’ The team regrouped and entered the road at Shoreditch High Street at around 11:20, disrupting traffic for around 20 minutes.
Further actions are expected later today.
A Youth Demand Spokesperson said:
“How can we claim to be a civilised society when it is built on a bedrock of such depravity? UK made weapons and equipment are being used to annihilate children displaced from their homes, whilst western media continues to ‘both sides’ this, presenting it as war, when it is a genocide. Future generations will regard our leaders as the criminals they are and they will be held to account.”
One of those taking action is Peter Dumont from London, who said:
“When the social contract breaks down we have civil disobedience as a last resort. I am sick and tired of watching my government support genocide. This government was elected on a mandate to provide change and yet they continue with more of the same, cancelling only 10% of weapons sales to Israel and saying fossil fuel burning will continue for ‘decades to come’. Trade embargos were fundamental to ending apartheid in South Africa, we need a total trade embargo on Israel right now.”
Today’s action comes as the genocide hits another grim milestone, as 2000 Palestinians have now been killed since Israel broke the ceasefire last month. 60 have been killed in early morning raids since Thursday morning. Israel is currently carrying out war crimes with impunity targeting refugee camps and displacement shelters. Meanwhile the UK continues to trade weapons with Israel. [2]
Young people will not accept these crimes against humanity and we will not be led by war criminals and arsonists. We cannot allow those in power to get away with facilitating the systematic annihilation of an entire culture. It’s time to take to the streets day after day and to demand better.
