Youth Demand supporters swarm London

Dozens of Youth Demand supporters have taken to the streets, demanding that the UK government impose a total trade embargo on Israel, and make the super rich and fossil fuel elite pay damages to communities and countries most harmed by fossil fuel burning. [1]

At around 11am, around 65 supporters of Youth Demand gathered at Brunswick Square Gardens to discuss today’s actions as well as the principles of nonviolence. The supporters divided into two teams and at around 12:15 a group of 40 blocked traffic on Euston Road near King’s Cross station. The groups could be seen holding signs which read ‘Youth Demand an End to Genocide’ and ‘Stop Arming Israel’, and could be heard chanting ‘stop killing babies’. Police arrived shortly after and issued a warning under Section 7 of the Public Order Act. The group left the road after approximately 10 minutes.

At 13:30 this group moved to block Old Street Junction until about 13:55. Meanwhile another group of 20 people took action at Baker Street for around half an hour. Both groups are expected to engage in further disruptions later this afternoon.

One of those taking action today is Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld, 22, a politics and international relations student from East London, who said:

“Every day the Labour government is killing children in Palestine and they do not care so long as the money from Israeli trade keeps flowing. We have all seen what’s happening in Gaza and we must not look away. Children are dying. Entire families are starving.

Our government has a direct part in this genocide and they know it. Just two weeks ago, David Lammy himself admitted that Israel was violating international humanitarian law. Instead of having any humanity, our government is trying to silence and suppress those speaking out about these crimes. Police have gone so far as to break down the doors to a place of worship, because the government sees no profit in protecting human rights.”

Also taking action today is Stephanie Tarry, 28, a charity worker from Margate, who said:

“Israel’s genocide in Gaza is only escalating, with over 50,000 killed and hundreds murdered in recent days. The UK state’s repression of those speaking out against the genocide is only increasing, with police overreach at an all time high.

As citizens in a country complicit in war crimes, we have a moral duty to stand with Palestinians. Join Youth Demand this April to show that we will not be deterred and will not be intimidated.”

Today’s actions come on the back of a new wave of atrocities committed by Israel. More than 1000 people have been killed since the ceasefire collapse on March 18th. 280,000 have also been displaced since that time. UNICEF have stated that at least 100 children are reported killed or injured every day in Gaza. The UN has warned that Israel’s recent attack on the West Bank has caused the largest displacement of Palestinians since 1967. Meanwhile, the UK continues to support genocide by supplying arms, whilst conducting more surveillance flights on behalf of Isreal over Gaza than any other country. [2][3][4][5]

Young people will not accept these crimes against humanity and we will not be led by war criminals and arsonists. We cannot allow those in power to get away with facilitating the systematic annihilation of an entire culture. It’s time to take to the streets day after day and to demand better. Only sustained mass resistance can put an end to this genocide. Sign up to take action at youthdemand.org.
